The role of long noncoding RNAs in cancer metastasis
Signaling pathways are tightly controlled systems that regulate the appropriate timing of gene expression required for the differentiation of cells down a particular lineage essential for proper tissue development. Proliferation, apoptosis and metabolic pathways are just a few examples of the signaling pathways that require fine-tuning, so as to control the proper development of a particular tissue type or organ system. An estimated 70% of the genome is actively transcribed, only 2% of which codes for known protein-coding genes. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in particular, are a large and diverse class of RNAs > 200 nucleotides in length, and not translated into protein.

Direct research contributions for the noncoding RNA program at The Brain Institute of America
Targeting the Rest of Your Genome to Detect Glioblastoma
The treatments available for glioblastoma multiform (GBM) patients provide a minimal survival benefit, and novel methodologies to detect and treat GBM are needed. This project focuses on a gene product called noncoding RNA, a molecule that regulates the expression of tumor-causing genes at the RNA level. The Institute identified novel RNA transcripts detectable in human cancer. We will determine the consequences when cells lose these transcripts and will develop noncoding RNA biomarkers for GBM.

Support the Mission!
We support brain cancer awareness and brain cancer advocacy programs. Remember it takes time, energy, and effort to research the literature and provide those interested with the most up to date scientific content. Please consider a small donation, so that we can continue to provide you with quality content for those interested in making a difference. Support is simple, and requires as little as a $1.00 contribution. Thank you!
